Chris Hyland
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Chris was born and educated in Cape Town and read for a BA majoring in History and Political Science. He has been involved in the Property, Banking and Finance industries for some thirty-four years and has vast hands on experience with listed and unlisted companies. He gained banking and structured finance experience at BOE Ltd before being appointed as Managing Director of the formerly listed Western Cape Property Company Ltd.
In 2003 he joined with Richard Brake and Christopher Moore to form Kaikoura Capital. He has project exposure to large scale commercial, residential and mixed use projects and focuses on sourcing and executing projects in the company.
Richard Brake
CHAIRMAN
Richard Brake was born and educated in Bath, England and studied at St Peter’s College Oxford securing a MA in Engineering Science and Economics.
Thereafter he pursued a nineteen year career in the City, initially in corporate finance and fixed income securities, but later as a proprietary trader and hedge fund manager investing across a broad spectrum of financial instruments, commodities, currencies and derivatives throughout the world.
Richard’s later City career included spending seven years as director in charge of treasury and capital markets at Tokai Bank Europe, following which he became a partner at Tudor Proprietary Trading LLC.
In 1996 he formed Kaikoura Investments and in 2003, Kaikoura Capital (Pty) Ltd.
Brian Smith
FINANCIAL DIRECTOR
Brian Smith was born and educated in London, England where he completed an honours degree in Business Studies, majoring in finance and marketing.
After working as group financial director of a European corporate business with emphasis on due diligence / mergers and acquisitions he moved to Cape Town in 2005 and brought his vast experience of commerce and industry to Kaikoura Capital in 2008.
Brian focuses on group financial management, corporate governance and legal compliance.
Mary-Rose Smith
PERSONAL ASSISTANT
Mary-Rose completed schooling in Pretoria and thereafter lived in Johannesburg for several years, relocating to Cape Town in 2001.
Mary-Rose has worked for various corporate companies in the field of law, advertising and marketing, gaining extensive experience in the positions of AE and PA.
Mary-Rose joined Kaikoura Capital in 2007 as personal assistant to the directors and manages
day-to-day office operations, providing fundamental support to our team.
Angela Verwey
ACCOUNTS ADMINISTRATOR
Angela’s working career started in a clerical position at the Southern Life Association and progressed to that of accountant for the Property Division. Over the years, the experience she gained over and above the usual financial duties included the setting of systems, procedures and controls nationally and being involved in the development of a number of property management systems with the IT team.
She has been with Kaikoura Capital for the past ten years in the position of Finance and Administration assistant to the Financial Director. She loves being involved in the property industry, this being her passion and specialised area of expertise.
Matthew Elseworth
PROJECTS AND OPERATIONS MANAGER
Matt was born and bred in the southern suburbs of Cape Town and completed his education with a degree in Construction Management at the University of Cape Town after attending Wynberg Boys’ High School.
Matt completed his in-service training for his degree in the RDP housing sector as well as in the mine construction sector, before returning to The University of Cape Town in 2014 to complete his honours degree in construction management.
Zachary Brake
MARKETING AND SALES CO-ORDINATOR
Zachary was born in England and relocated to
Cape Town with his family in the year 2000. After attending Bishops Diocesan College he completed a year of International and Global relations at the University of Sydney.
He then transferred to the University Of Cape Town where he completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences majoring in Statistics, Economics, Spanish and Sociology, before concluding his studies with a Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship.
